New Delhi: India is preparing to accord a warm welcome to Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih during his upcoming state visit from March 1-4, despite recent strains in diplomatic relations.

Strained Ties:

In recent months, tensions have escalated due to India’s criticism of the Maldives’ decision to grant a 99-year lease of an airstrip on Gan island to a Chinese state-owned company. India has expressed concerns about the strategic implications of the deal for the Indian Ocean region.

Diplomatic Efforts:

Despite the tensions, both India and the Maldives have expressed a desire to improve relations. In January, Indian Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla visited Male to hold talks with President Solih.

Grand Welcome Planned:

As part of its diplomatic outreach, India has planned a grand welcome for President Solih. He will be accorded a ceremonial reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan, hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and attend a banquet hosted by President Ram Nath Kovind.

Focus on Cooperation:

During the visit, the two leaders are expected to discuss a wide range of issues, including trade, investment, security, and regional cooperation. India is keen to strengthen economic ties with the Maldives and support its development.

Symbol of Improved Relations:

The state visit is seen as a symbol of India’s commitment to improving relations with the Maldives and addressing their concerns. It is hoped that the visit will pave the way for a more constructive and cooperative partnership between the two countries.
