The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has appointed senior leaders Rajnath Singh and Bhupender Yadav as observers to select the new Chief Minister of Odisha.

The decision was taken after the resignation of Naveen Patnaik as the Chief Minister following the party’s poor performance in the recently concluded assembly elections. The BJP emerged as the second largest party in the state, winning 23 seats out of 147.

Singh, the Union Minister of Defense, and Yadav, the Union Minister of Labour and Employment, will be responsible for consulting with the newly elected MLAs and party leaders in Odisha to finalize a consensus candidate for the position of Chief Minister.

Sources within the party have indicated that several potential contenders are being considered, including former Union Minister Jual Oram, former state unit president Sameer Mohanty, and BJP state vice-president Bishnu Sethi.

The BJP’s decision to appoint observers is aimed at ensuring a smooth and transparent selection process that reflects the wishes of the party’s grassroots members. The observers are expected to submit their recommendations to the party’s central leadership within the next few days.

The announcement of the new Chief Minister is crucial for the BJP as it seeks to consolidate its position in Odisha and prepare for the upcoming general elections in 2024.
