BJP Government’s Oath Ceremony in Odisha Postponed Amid Suspense Over Chief Minister

Odisha, March 9, 2023

The oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Odisha has been postponed indefinitely, amidst suspense over who will be the next Chief Minister.

The delay is reportedly due to ongoing discussions within the party over the selection of a suitable candidate. Several names have been doing the rounds, including former Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, incumbent state BJP President Samir Mohanty, and ex-MLA Basanta Panda.

The BJP emerged as the largest party in the recent assembly elections, winning 82 seats in the 147-member legislature. However, it fell short of a majority and will require the support of other parties or independent MLAs to form a government.

Sources within the party indicate that the decision on the Chief Minister is likely to be taken by the BJP’s central leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party president J.P. Nadda.

The postponement of the oath ceremony has created uncertainty and speculation in the state political circles. Several leaders have expressed their aspirations for the top post, and their supporters have been actively lobbying for their candidacies.

The BJP has maintained that the decision will be made in the best interests of the state. It is expected that the party leadership will make an announcement in the coming days, once the necessary consultations and deliberations have been completed.
