Black Democrats Fired Up for Biden and Harris at Essence Fest: “We’re Not Taking This Back”

New Orleans, LA – The energy was palpable at Essence Festival, a celebration of Black culture and community. But this year, there was a clear political undercurrent: a fierce determination to re-elect President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

The numbers don’t lie: Black voters played a crucial role in Biden’s victory in 2020. Exit polls showed that 87% of Black voters cast their ballots for Biden, a testament to the deep connection he has built with the Black community. And with the 2024 election looming, Black Democrats are doubling down on their support for the current administration.

“It’s about more than just voting,” said Simone Jackson, a young activist who attended the festival. “It’s about protecting what we fought for. We’re not going to let this progress be erased.”

Jackson’s sentiment echoed throughout the festival. Attendees pointed to the Biden administration’s accomplishments, including:

  • Passing the American Rescue Plan, providing much-needed economic relief to families struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Confirming Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court, a historic moment for Black representation in the highest court of the land.
  • Investing in infrastructure, creating jobs and strengthening the economy.

But it’s not just about the past: Black Democrats are also looking forward, excited about the potential of a second Biden term.

“Kamala Harris is a force to be reckoned with,” said Marcus Johnson, a veteran of the political scene. “She’s fighting for our issues, and she’s not afraid to stand up to the other side.”

Harris’s leadership, coupled with Biden’s experience and commitment to fighting for Black America, has solidified their position as the clear choice for many Black voters.

“We know what’s at stake,” said Jackson. “This election is about our future, our children’s future, and the future of our country. We’re not going to take this back.”

The message resonated with the crowd. The energy at Essence Fest was a powerful demonstration of the Black community’s commitment to fighting for their rights and their future. With the 2024 election just around the corner, Black Democrats are ready to mobilize and ensure that their voices are heard.
