London: British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has expressed regret for leaving the D-Day anniversary commemorations in France early, missing a speech by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Sunak left the events at Sword Beach in Normandy on Monday shortly after meeting with Zelenskyy. The Prime Minister’s office cited “urgent domestic matters” as the reason for his departure.

However, the decision to leave before the Ukrainian leader’s address was met with criticism. Some commentators argued that it sent a weak message about the UK’s support for Ukraine amidst the ongoing war with Russia.

In a statement, Sunak said he “regret[ted] having to leave before hearing President Zelenskyy’s speech.” He added that he had been “deeply moved” by the commemorations and the “extraordinary sacrifices” made by the Allied forces during D-Day.

Sunak also emphasized the UK’s “unwavering commitment” to Ukraine and its people. He said the country would continue to provide “military, humanitarian, and economic support” to help them fight for their freedom and democracy.

The Prime Minister’s early departure from the D-Day events has highlighted the balancing act that Western leaders face in supporting Ukraine while also managing domestic concerns.
