New Delhi, Feb 14 (IANS) Buoyed by its victory in the recently concluded assembly elections in three states, the Congress on Tuesday urged former party chief Rahul Gandhi to take up the role of the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha.

According to sources, the issue was discussed at a meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), the party’s highest decision-making body.

“There was a strong consensus in the CWC that Rahul Gandhi should take up the role of LoP in the Lok Sabha. We believe that his leadership and experience will be invaluable to the party as we prepare for the 2024 general elections,” a senior Congress leader told IANS.

However, Gandhi is yet to make a decision on the matter.

“I will take a decision on the LoP role soon. I am currently focused on strengthening the party and ensuring that we emerge victorious in the upcoming assembly elections in Karnataka and Rajasthan,” Gandhi told reporters after the CWC meeting.

The Congress leadership’s request to Gandhi to take up the LoP role comes at a time when the party is facing a leadership vacuum. Former party chief Sonia Gandhi has been out of active politics for some time due to health reasons, while her son Rahul Gandhi has been reluctant to take up the reins of the party full-time.

If Gandhi agrees to take up the LoP role, it will be seen as a major boost for the Congress. He is widely seen as the party’s most charismatic and popular leader, and his presence in the Lok Sabha will help the party take on the government more effectively.

However, Gandhi has also been criticised for his lack of experience in government and his frequent gaffes. Some Congress leaders fear that his appointment as LoP could backfire on the party if he is unable to rise to the occasion.

Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to take up the LoP role is up to Gandhi. If he agrees, it will be a major step forward for the Congress as it looks to rebuild itself after its recent electoral setbacks.
