The Indian National Congress (Congress) has passed a resolution urging the government to appoint Rahul Gandhi as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of Parliament. This move comes amidst a growing demand for a strong opposition leader in the face of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) dominance in the Lok Sabha.

The resolution, which was passed unanimously at a meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), the party’s highest decision-making body, states that “Rahul Gandhi is the most qualified and deserving candidate to lead the opposition in the Lok Sabha.” It cites his experience as the party’s Vice President, his articulation of alternative policies, and his commitment to fighting for the rights of the people.

The BJP currently holds 303 seats in the 543-member Lok Sabha, while the Congress has only 52 seats. As the single largest opposition party, the Congress is entitled to the post of Leader of the Opposition. However, the government has so far not recognized the Congress’s claim, arguing that the party does not have enough representation to qualify.

The Congress resolution calls on the government to “respect parliamentary norms and conventions” by appointing Rahul Gandhi as the Leader of the Opposition. It also urges the BJP to “engage in constructive dialogue and work towards a consensus on this issue.”

The appointment of a Leader of the Opposition is a crucial aspect of parliamentary democracy, as it provides a voice to the opposition and ensures that the government is held accountable. The Congress’s demand for Rahul Gandhi to be appointed as the Leader of the Opposition is a significant development in the political landscape of India, and it remains to be seen whether the government will accede to this request.
