Ding Beats Nakamura, Extends Carlsen’s Lead in Norway Chess

Stavanger, Norway – Ding Liren scored a crucial victory over Hikaru Nakamura in round seven of Norway Chess, solidifying his position in the top three and helping tournament leader Magnus Carlsen maintain his lead.

Carlsen drew his game against Fabiano Caruana, extending his unbeaten streak to 30 games and keeping him a full point ahead of Ding. Nakamura and Anish Giri share third place with 3.5 points, while Caruana trails with 3 points.

Ding’s victory was particularly impressive, as he outplayed Nakamura with the black pieces. The Chinese grandmaster seized the initiative early on and gradually increased his advantage, eventually converting his extra pawn into a full point.

“I played well and I’m very happy with my performance today,” said Ding after the game. “Nakamura is a strong player, so it was a great win for me.”

Nakamura, on the other hand, was disappointed with his loss. “I didn’t play well at all,” he said. “I made several mistakes and Ding punished me for them.”

With three rounds remaining, Carlsen remains the heavy favorite to win Norway Chess for the third time. However, Ding, Nakamura, and Giri are all within striking distance and will be hoping to upset the world champion.
