New Delhi, May 2: The Congress Working Committee (CWC), the highest decision-making body of the Congress, began its meeting in Delhi on Tuesday to discuss the party’s performance in the recently concluded assembly elections and to deliberate on the way forward.

The meeting is being chaired by Congress President Sonia Gandhi and is being attended by senior party leaders, including former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, former party president Rahul Gandhi, and general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

The CWC is expected to discuss the party’s performance in the assembly elections held in five states — Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa, and Manipur. The Congress performed poorly in all five states, winning only 19 seats out of a total of 690 seats.

The party is expected to introspect on the reasons for its poor performance and to take corrective measures to improve its chances in future elections.

The CWC is also expected to discuss the party’s strategy for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, which are due to be held in 2024. The party is expected to put up a united front against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and to forge alliances with other opposition parties.

The Congress is also expected to discuss the party’s leadership issue. Rahul Gandhi, who resigned as party president after the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, has been under pressure to return to the post. However, there is no clarity on whether he will accept the post.

The CWC meeting is likely to continue for several hours and is expected to come up with a roadmap for the party’s future.
