Veteran actress Farida Jalal has come to the defense of her co-star Sharmin Segal in the upcoming web series “Heeramandi.” Segal’s performance in the trailer had drawn criticism from some social media users.

In an interview with Hindustan Times, Jalal stated that people should not be mean to Segal and that it was possible that her acting capacity was limited.

“I think it’s very unfair to comment negatively on someone’s work before you’ve even seen the whole project. Maybe that’s her capacity, maybe that’s what she can do,” said Jalal.

Jalal emphasized the importance of supporting young actors and allowing them to grow. She noted that Segal was a debutante and would need time to develop her skills.

“She’s a new girl, she’s just started. We have to give her a chance to evolve and mature. How do you expect her to act like Meryl Streep in her first role?” asked Jalal.

Jalal praised the director of “Heeramandi,” Sanjay Leela Bhansali, for giving Segal an opportunity to showcase her talent. She expressed confidence that the actress would prove her detractors wrong with her performance in the series.

“Sanjay Leela Bhansali is a visionary director. He doesn’t cast anyone without a reason. I believe in Sharmin, and I’m sure she’ll make us all proud,” said Jalal.

“Heeramandi” is set to premiere on Netflix in 2023 and stars an ensemble cast including Manisha Koirala, Richa Chadha, and Sonakshi Sinha.
