India At Olympics Day 3: Manu Bhaker Aims High, Archery Struggles Again

Day 3 at the Tokyo Olympics saw India’s athletes continue their quest for glory, with mixed results across various disciplines. While Manu Bhaker impressed with a strong showing in the 10m Air Pistol, the archery team faced another disappointing day, failing to advance beyond the Round of 16.

Bhaker Fires Back for Bronze:

The star of the day was undoubtedly Manu Bhaker. The young shooter, who had narrowly missed out on a medal in the Women’s 10m Air Pistol event at the 2018 Asian Games, showcased her remarkable resilience and composure in Tokyo.

Bhaker finished third in the qualification round with a score of 578, securing her spot in the finals. Though she couldn’t quite match her qualification performance in the final, her consistent shooting saw her finish a respectable 4th overall. While missing out on a medal, Bhaker’s performance was a testament to her dedication and unwavering spirit.

Archery Struggles Continue:

Unfortunately, the Indian archery team’s Olympic campaign continues to be marred by disappointment. Both the men’s and women’s teams suffered early exits in the Round of 16.

The men’s team, comprising of Atanu Das, Pravin Jadhav, and Tarundeep Rai, lost a closely contested match against the Netherlands 5-3. Despite a strong start, the Indians couldn’t maintain their composure, ultimately falling short against the European team.

The women’s team, consisting of Deepika Kumari, Ankita Bhakat, and Komalika Bari, also fell to the Dutch in the Round of 16, losing 6-2. The team, ranked 3rd in the world, faced a disappointing early exit, highlighting the need for improved consistency at the highest level.

Other Indian Performances:

While the spotlight was on Bhaker and the archers, other Indian athletes also competed with determination.

In badminton, PV Sindhu, the reigning World Champion, faced a tough opponent in Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in the Women’s Singles Round of 16. Despite putting up a strong fight, Sindhu lost the match 21-13, 21-15, ending her campaign in the Olympics.

The men’s hockey team secured a comfortable 7-1 victory against Argentina in their Pool A match. The impressive performance, fueled by goals from Simranjeet Singh (2), Gurjant Singh (2), Hardik Singh, Manpreet Singh, and Dilpreet Singh, puts India in a strong position in their pool.
