West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said that her party, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), will not stake a claim to form the government at the Centre on Friday, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi takes oath for a second term.

Speaking to supporters in Kolkata, Banerjee said, “We are not staking claim to form the government today. But we might very well do so when Parliament convenes.”

The TMC won 22 seats in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, making it the fourth-largest party in the Lower House. The party has been a vocal critic of the Modi government and has alleged that the polls were rigged in favor of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Banerjee said that the TMC will continue to fight against the BJP’s “divisive agenda.”

“The BJP is trying to divide the country on communal lines. We will not allow them to succeed,” she said.

The TMC chief also called on all opposition parties to unite against the BJP.

“We need to put aside our differences and come together to defeat the BJP. This is a fight for the soul of India,” she said.

The Modi government will be sworn in on Friday, May 30. The swearing-in ceremony will be held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.
