New Delhi, May 26 (Reuters): President Ram Nath Kovind on Thursday invited Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Narendra Modi to form a new government after his party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won a resounding victory in the general election.

Modi accepted the invitation and will be sworn in as Prime Minister for a second term on Sunday at 7 pm, President Kovind’s office said in a statement.

The BJP-led NDA secured a comfortable majority in the Lok Sabha, winning 353 of the 542 seats up for grabs. The BJP alone bagged 303 seats, its highest ever tally.

Prime Minister Modi thanked the people of India for placing their trust in him and his party. “Together we will build a strong and prosperous India,” he tweeted.

Other members of the NDA, including the Shiv Sena, the Janata Dal (United), and the Lok Janshakti Party, have also expressed their support for Modi as Prime Minister.

The swearing-in ceremony will take place at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the official residence of the President of India. A host of national and international dignitaries are expected to attend the ceremony.

Modi’s victory marks a continuation of his party’s dominance in Indian politics. The BJP has now won two consecutive Lok Sabha elections under his leadership.
