Is EVM dead or alive?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swipe at the Opposition after the Lok Sabha elections, saying that the EVMs are “dead or alive”, has sparked a fresh round of debate on the reliability of the electronic voting machines. The Congress has said that it is “collecting evidence” to show that the EVMs were tampered with in the recent elections.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has maintained that the EVMs are secure and tamper-proof. However, there have been several allegations of EVM tampering in the past, and some political parties have expressed doubts about the reliability of the machines.

In the recent Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won a landslide victory, winning 303 seats in the 543-member Lower House of Parliament. The Congress, which was the main opposition party, won only 52 seats.

After the elections, Modi said that the EVMs were “dead or alive” and that the Opposition was making excuses for its defeat. The Congress has hit back, saying that it is “collecting evidence” to show that the EVMs were tampered with.

The ECI has said that it will investigate any allegations of EVM tampering. However, it has also said that the EVMs are secure and tamper-proof.

The debate over the reliability of EVMs is likely to continue in the run-up to the next Lok Sabha elections, which are scheduled to be held in 2024.
