Is EVM Dead or Alive? PM Modi Takes Swipe at Opposition

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday took a swipe at the opposition parties, accusing them of questioning the credibility of electronic voting machines (EVMs) after their defeat in the recent assembly elections.

Addressing a rally in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, Modi said, “After the results of the assembly elections came out, some people started playing with the EVMs. They are saying EVMs are dead.”

“I want to tell them that EVMs are not dead, they are alive and kicking,” he added.

The opposition parties, including the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party, have been raising concerns over the use of EVMs, alleging that they can be tampered with. However, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has repeatedly asserted that EVMs are robust and secure.

In the recently concluded assembly elections in five states, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged victorious in four – Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, and Manipur. The Congress won in Punjab.

The opposition parties have alleged that the BJP’s victory was due to the use of EVMs. The Congress has even demanded that the upcoming Lok Sabha elections be conducted using paper ballots instead of EVMs.

The ECI has dismissed these allegations, saying that the EVMs are tamper-proof. The commission has also invited political parties to inspect the EVMs and the process of voting.
