The Incident:

On March 17, 2023, Liane Popolizio, a 39-year-old English teacher from Utah, was returning home to her apartment in the Jing’an district of Shanghai when she saw a man loitering near the entrance.

“I didn’t think much of it,” Popolizio told reporters. “But as I walked towards my door, he started following me.”

As Popolizio reached for her key, the man lunged at her with a knife, stabbing her multiple times in the chest, back, and shoulder.

“I screamed, ‘I’ve been stabbed!'” Popolizio recalled. “But no one came to my aid.”

The Escape:

Despite her injuries, Popolizio managed to fight off her attacker and stumbled out of the building. She ran to a nearby convenience store and called for help.

“I was covered in blood,” Popolizio said. “The store clerk was so scared, but he called the police and an ambulance.”

Investigation and Aftermath:

The police arrived quickly and arrested the suspect, a 55-year-old Chinese man who had been squatting in the building. He has since been charged with attempted murder.

Popolizio was rushed to the hospital where she underwent surgery for her injuries. She is currently recovering and expected to make a full physical recovery.

Security Concerns:

The attack has raised concerns about safety in Shanghai, a city that is generally considered to be safe for foreigners.

“I’m shocked that this happened,” said Popolizio’s friend, who asked not to be named. “I never thought I’d be afraid to walk home in the middle of the afternoon.”

Reaction from Authorities:

The Shanghai authorities have condemned the attack and vowed to investigate it thoroughly. They have also increased security patrols in the area where the incident occurred.

“We are committed to ensuring the safety of all foreigners in Shanghai,” said a spokesman for the city’s Public Security Bureau. “We will do everything we can to prevent incidents like this from happening again.”
