Jitin Prasada, Anupriya Patel Join Modi’s Cabinet Redux

In the recent expansion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet, two prominent leaders from Uttar Pradesh found places: Jitin Prasada of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Anupriya Patel of the Apna Dal (S).

Jitin Prasada: BJP’s UP Brahmin Face

Jitin Prasada, a scion of the prominent Congress family of Uttar Pradesh, crossed over to the BJP in June 2021. His induction into the cabinet is seen as an attempt by the BJP to consolidate its support among Brahmin voters ahead of the 2022 state assembly elections. Prasada has been appointed as the Minister of State for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways.

Anupriya Patel: Apna Dal (S) Chief

Anupriya Patel, the daughter of late politician Sonelal Patel, has been heading the Apna Dal (S) since 2016. The Apna Dal (S) is a regional party in Uttar Pradesh that has a significant influence among the Kurmi caste. Patel has been appointed as the Minister of State for Commerce and Industry.

Strategic Moves for UP

Both Prasada and Patel have strong support bases in their respective communities, which are considered crucial for the BJP’s electoral success in Uttar Pradesh. Their inclusion in the cabinet is seen as a strategic move by the BJP to strengthen its position in the state and counter the challenges posed by the opposition.

Inclusion and Diversity

The expansion of Modi’s cabinet has been praised for its inclusiveness and diversity, particularly in terms of regional and caste representation. The appointment of Prasada and Patel signals the BJP’s commitment to accomodating different sections of society and strengthening its support base across the country.
