Janata Dal (United) leader KC Tyagi has expressed his disappointment over the party’s decision to decline an offer for Nitish Kumar to become the Prime Ministerial candidate of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

In a recent interview with Hindustan Times, Tyagi revealed that a senior BJP leader approached him in 2019 and proposed Kumar’s name for the top post. However, he said that JD(U) declined the offer, citing Kumar’s commitment to Bihar.

“I was surprised when a senior BJP leader came to me in 2019 and said, ‘Nitish should become PM.’ I conveyed the message to Nitish. We discussed it, but he said he wanted to remain in Bihar,” Tyagi said.

Tyagi believes that JD(U)’s refusal was a mistake, as Kumar could have emerged as a strong contender for the Prime Minister’s office. He pointed out that Kumar has a clean image and a track record of good governance in Bihar.

“If Nitish had become PM, it would have been a great thing for India. He is a leader who is respected by all parties,” Tyagi added.

However, JD(U) has maintained that its decision not to pursue the Prime Ministership was in the best interests of Bihar. The party believes that Kumar’s leadership is essential for the state’s development and stability.
