Paris, France – French President Emmanuel Macron has called for a snap legislative election after his party lost its majority in the European Parliament.
In a televised address to the nation, Macron said that the results of the EU vote were a “serious wake-up call” for the country. He called for a “strong renewal” of the National Assembly, the lower house of Parliament, to give him the support he needs to implement his reforms.
The snap election will be held on June 12 and 19. Macron’s party, La République En Marche (LREM), is expected to face a stiff challenge from the far-right Rassemblement National and the left-wing La France Insoumise.
Macron’s decision to call a snap election is a gamble. If his party fails to win a majority, he will be forced to work with other parties to form a government. This could weaken his ability to implement his agenda.
However, Macron believes that a snap election is the best way to resolve the political stalemate in France. He has urged voters to support him in order to “build a stronger and more united France.”
