Hyderabad: Ramoji Rao, the founder and chairman of ETV Network, one of India’s largest media conglomerates, has passed away at the age of 87.

Rao died on Thursday, July 7, 2023, at his residence in Hyderabad after a brief illness, according to a statement issued by ETV Network.

Born in the Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh in 1936, Rao began his career as a journalist and filmmaker. In 1995, he launched ETV, which quickly became one of the most popular television channels in India.

ETV Network expanded rapidly under Rao’s leadership, becoming a major player in the television, film, and print industries. The network operates over 100 channels in India and abroad, reaching an estimated audience of over 1 billion people.

Rao was also a successful film producer, having produced over 60 Telugu and Hindi films. He received several awards and accolades for his contributions to the entertainment industry, including the Padma Vibhushan, one of India’s highest civilian honors.

Rao’s death is a significant loss to the media and entertainment industry in India. He was known for his vision, entrepreneurship, and commitment to journalism and entertainment.

He is survived by his wife, three sons, and a daughter.

The funeral will be held in Hyderabad on Friday, July 8, 2023.
