New Delhi: Amit Shah, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president, was sworn in as a Union minister in the Narendra Modi government on Wednesday (July 7, 2021). Shah was administered the oath of office and secrecy by President Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Shah, who is considered a close aide of Prime Minister Modi, has been assigned the portfolio of Home Affairs. He has previously served as the Home Minister of Gujarat from 2002 to 2014.

Shah’s induction into the Union cabinet comes amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the aftermath of the second wave of infections. As Home Minister, he will be responsible for overseeing the overall internal security of the country, including law and order, counter-terrorism, and disaster management.

The oath-taking ceremony was held in the Durbar Hall of Rashtrapati Bhavan, with only a few select dignitaries in attendance due to COVID-19 protocols. Shah was accompanied by his wife Sonal Shah and other family members.

Prime Minister Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and other senior ministers congratulated Shah on his new role. The swearing-in ceremony marks the beginning of a new chapter in the Modi government 3.0, which is expected to focus on economic recovery, job creation, and strengthening national security.
