Narendra Modi Oath: BJP’s Balancing Act with Potential Cabinet Additions

New Delhi: As Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to take oath for a second term on May 30, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) faces the challenge of accommodating various allies in the new Cabinet. Key among them are the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) led by Chandrababu Naidu and the Janata Dal (United) (JDU) led by Nitish Kumar.

TDP’s Expectations

The TDP, which withdrew its support from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) over the special status issue for Andhra Pradesh, has expressed interest in rejoining the government. Naidu is reportedly seeking three Cabinet berths for his party. However, the BJP is hesitant to give up so many slots, especially considering its own expanded strength in the Lok Sabha.

JDU’s Demands

The JDU, which has been a key ally of the BJP in Bihar, is also expecting representation in the Cabinet. Kumar has reportedly indicated his willingness to take up a ministerial position himself. The BJP is considering offering a cabinet or minister of state rank to the JDU.

Balancing Act

To accommodate these allies, the BJP will have to carefully navigate its options. The party has already allocated 24 Cabinet berths to its own members, leaving only 11 for allies. By offering two Cabinet berths and two minister of state posts to the TDP and JDU combined, the BJP could potentially appease both parties.

However, such a move would also reduce the representation of other NDA constituents, such as the Shiv Sena and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP). The BJP will need to find a way to strike a balance between rewarding its allies and maintaining internal stability within the ruling coalition.

Potential Fallout

If the BJP fails to accommodate the TDP and JDU in a satisfactory manner, it could risk losing their support in Parliament. This would weaken the NDA’s majority and make it more difficult for the government to pass crucial legislation.

Conclusion

As Narendra Modi prepares to form his new government, the BJP must carefully consider how to accommodate its allies. Balancing the demands of the TDP and JDU while preserving its own strength will be a delicate task. The party’s decision will have a significant impact on the longevity and effectiveness of the NDA government.
