WASHINGTON (Investing.com) – NASA has awarded $10.4 million to seven companies to develop technologies for its Mars Sample Return mission, which aims to return Martian rock and soil samples to Earth for further analysis.

The contracts were awarded to Rocket Propulsion Systems, Space Systems, Aerojet Rocketdyne, Blue Origin, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and United Launch Alliance.

The Mars Sample Return mission, scheduled for launch in 2026, involves sending a rover to Mars to collect samples from a previously-identified landing site. The samples will then be returned to Earth via a spacecraft in 2031.

NASA’s goal is to utilize the samples to gain a better understanding of Mars’ past and present habitability, as well as its potential for life. The samples will also provide scientists with valuable insights into the red planet’s climate and geological history.

The seven companies awarded contracts will develop technologies critical to the mission’s success, including:
