NCP Missed Cabinet Berth over MoS Insistence, Claims Fadnavis

Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday revealed that the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) missed out on a cabinet berth in the state government due to its insistence on the Ministry of State (MoS) with Independent Charge.

In a press conference, Fadnavis explained that the Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde, had offered the NCP a cabinet position, but the party had declined, demanding the MoS post instead. “We were ready to give them a full-fledged cabinet portfolio, but they wanted MoS with independent charge,” he said.

Fadnavis noted that the MoS with Independent Charge position is not mandated by the Constitution and is only given in exceptional circumstances. “In this case, there was no such exceptional situation that warranted giving them an independent charge,” he added.

According to Fadnavis, the NCP’s decision to prioritize a MoS position over a cabinet berth was a “tactical mistake.” “This indicates that they are not interested in governance but only in preserving their personal interests,” he remarked.

The NCP has not yet commented on Fadnavis’s claims, but sources within the party suggest that they are considering their options. Meanwhile, the Shinde-led government has proceeded with its cabinet appointments, allocating portfolios to its members.
