With the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) set to form the next government at the Centre, the contours of the new National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government are beginning to emerge.

According to sources in the BJP, the party is likely to retain key portfolios such as Defence and External Affairs, which were held by Nirmala Sitharaman and Sushma Swaraj respectively in the previous government.

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the Janata Dal (United) (JDU), two of the BJP’s key allies, are likely to be rewarded for their support with three ministerial berths each.

The TDP is expected to get the key Ministry of Commerce and Industry, while the JDU could get the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the Ministry of Rural Development.

Other potential portfolios for the BJP allies include the Ministry of Railways, the Ministry of Food and Civil Supplies, and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

The BJP is also considering creating a new ministry to deal with issues related to water resources and river development. This ministry could be headed by a senior member of the party or by a member of one of its allies.

The final allocation of portfolios will be decided after the new government takes office, which is expected to happen in the third week of May.
