No NCP in Modi 3.0, Fadnavis Says No Consensus on Cabinet Offer

Amidst the formation of the Modi 3.0 government, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) is conspicuous by its absence. This has sparked speculation about the party’s future and the possibility of it joining the ruling coalition.

However, Maharashtra’s former Chief Minister and BJP leader, Devendra Fadnavis, has ruled out any such move for the time being. Speaking to reporters, Fadnavis stated that there is no consensus within the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on offering a cabinet berth to the NCP.

“There has been no discussion about including the NCP in the Modi government. It is a closed chapter,” Fadnavis said.

The NCP, led by Sharad Pawar, was an ally of the Congress in the previous UPA government. However, it snapped ties with the Congress in the run-up to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The NCP then contested the elections as part of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) but was unable to secure any seats in the Lok Sabha.

Following the elections, there were reports that the NCP was in talks with the BJP to join the NDA government. However, these talks have apparently failed to materialize.

Fadnavis’s statement puts an end to speculation about the possibility of the NCP joining the Modi government. It also suggests that the BJP is unlikely to expand its coalition in the near future.
