PM Modi ‘saddened’, Jaishankar ‘deeply shocked’: Condolences pour in after Kuwait fire mishap

Kuwait, August 4, 2023: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar have expressed grief over the devastating fire that broke out at a petrochemical facility in Kuwait, killing six firefighters.

In a tweet, PM Modi said, “Saddened to hear about the tragic fire incident in Kuwait. My deepest condolences to the families of the brave firefighters who lost their lives. May the injured recover soon. India stands in solidarity with Kuwait during this difficult time.”

“Deeply shocked to learn about the fire incident in Kuwait. Deepest condolences to the families of the firefighters who lost their lives while fighting the fire,” Jaishankar tweeted.

The fire broke out at the KNPC Mina Al-Ahmadi refinery on Thursday evening and quickly spread to nearby storage tanks. Six firefighters were killed while trying to control the blaze, which took several hours to extinguish.

Several other world leaders and organizations also expressed their condolences over the tragedy. UN Secretary-General António Guterres said he was “deeply saddened” by the loss of life and extended his sympathies to the families of the victims.

Indian Ambassador to Kuwait Sibi George met with Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Salem Abdullah Al-Jaber Al-Sabah to express India’s condolences. India has offered assistance to Kuwait in the aftermath of the disaster.

The Kuwait fire mishap is a reminder of the inherent risks associated with the petrochemical industry. Firefighters and other emergency responders put their lives on the line to protect our communities from such disasters. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims and all those affected by this tragedy.
