President Droupadi Murmu has rejected the mercy petition of Muhammad Arif, one of the three convicts in the 2000 Red Fort attack case. The attack resulted in the death of three Indian soldiers and the injury of numerous civilians.

Arif, along with his co-conspirators, Afzal Guru and Shaukat Hussain Guru, were convicted and sentenced to death in 2005. Guru was executed in 2013, while Hussain Guru died in prison in 2009.

In a statement, the Ministry of Home Affairs noted that Arif’s mercy plea was thoroughly examined and rejected after considering all factors, including the gravity of the offense and the need to uphold the rule of law.

The Red Fort attack, which occurred on December 22, 2000, is considered one of the most audacious terrorist strikes in Indian history. The attackers stormed the Red Fort, a historic monument and a symbol of Indian sovereignty, and engaged in a gun battle with security forces.

The attack was condemned by both India and the international community. It led to increased security measures at important sites and heightened concerns about terrorism.

The rejection of Arif’s mercy plea sends a strong message that India remains resolute in its fight against terrorism and that those responsible for such heinous acts will be held accountable.
