Process to Hold Assembly Polls in J&K Begins

Jammu and Kashmir, India

The process to hold assembly polls in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) has commenced, with the Election Commission of India (ECI) issuing notifications on Friday.

Delimitation Process Complete

The delimitation exercise in J&K was recently completed, resulting in the redrawing of assembly constituency boundaries. The number of assembly seats has increased from 83 to 90, with Jammu getting six additional seats and Kashmir Valley getting one.

Voter List Revision

The ECI has directed the revision of voter lists. Booth-level officers (BLOs) will visit households to verify and update voter information. New voters who have attained the age of 18 can also register.

ECI to Assess Security Situation

The ECI will assess the security situation in J&K to determine the appropriate dates for the polls. The Election Commission of India has sought a report from the Union Home Ministry on the security situation.

Political Parties Gear Up

Political parties in J&K have started preparing for the elections. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the ruling party at the center, is expected to campaign on its development agenda. The National Conference (NC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) are the main opposition parties.

Transparency and Inclusivity

The ECI has emphasized the need for transparency and inclusivity in the election process. It has assured that all sections of society will have the opportunity to participate in the polls.

The assembly elections in J&K are expected to be held later this year, paving the way for a new government in the Union Territory.
