Pune: Five people, including the father and grandfather of the accused teenager in connection with the horrific Pune car crash that killed five people, have been charged with abetment of suicide, according to ANI News.

Background:

On January 1, 2023, a speeding car driven by a 19-year-old crashed into a divider near the Swargate flyover in Pune, killing five of its occupants. The accused driver, who allegedly drove under the influence of alcohol, was arrested and charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Investigation and Charges:

During the investigation, the police found that the accused teenager had expressed suicidal thoughts in the past. Based on this, the police filed a case of abetment of suicide against his father, grandfather, and three others.

Allegations:

The accused’s family members are alleged to have failed to take reasonable steps to prevent the teenager from committing suicide, despite being aware of his mental health issues. The police also suspect that they may have provided him with alcohol.

Arrests and charges:

Following the charges, the police arrested the accused’s father, grandfather, a relative, and two of the teenager’s friends. They have been booked under section 306 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which deals with abetment of suicide.
