Ratna Pathak Shah Explains: Why She & Naseeruddin Shah Collaborate Despite Ideological Differences

Ratna Pathak Shah and Naseeruddin Shah, known for their strong opinions and intellectual prowess, have always been vocal about their beliefs. This has, at times, led to public clashes with other actors, including Anupam Kher and Paresh Rawal, who hold differing political views.

Despite these ideological differences, the Shahs have continued to work with Kher and Rawal on numerous projects. This has often sparked curiosity and raised questions about their willingness to collaborate.

Recently, in an interview, Ratna Pathak Shah addressed this issue, stating that “Art and ideology are separate.” She emphasized that “professionalism and respect for one’s craft trump personal beliefs”, highlighting the importance of maintaining a healthy work environment.

Shah also pointed out that the collaborative nature of filmmaking often requires actors to work with individuals they might not agree with outside of the set. This underscores the need to separate personal opinions from the creative process.

While the Shahs’ stance has been met with appreciation from some, others remain critical of their decision to work with actors they publicly disagree with. The debate on whether art should be divorced from ideology remains a complex one.
