In a significant development, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has called for the scrapping of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and urged the central government to allow states to conduct their own entrance examinations for medical courses.

Shivakumar’s statement comes amidst growing discontent among several states over the NEET exam, which is perceived by some as favoring students from affluent backgrounds and hindering access to medical education for students from underprivileged sections.

“The NEET exam is not fair to all students, especially those from rural areas and disadvantaged backgrounds,” Shivakumar stated, highlighting the need for a more inclusive and equitable system. He emphasized that allowing states to conduct their own entrance exams would enable them to tailor them to the specific needs and circumstances of their students.

This move by Karnataka joins a growing chorus of voices demanding changes to the NEET system. Several other states, including Tamil Nadu, have also expressed concerns about the exam’s fairness and its impact on access to medical education.

The demand to scrap NEET and reinstate state-level entrance exams raises crucial questions about the future of medical education in India. It remains to be seen how the central government will respond to these demands and whether a consensus can be reached on the best way forward for ensuring fair and equitable access to medical education for all students.
