Sudhakaran hints at Rahul Gandhi stepping down as Wayanad MP

Thiruvananthapuram: KPCC president K. Sudhakaran has given hints that Wayanad MP and AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi may step down from his Lok Sabha seat soon.

Talking to reporters after the Congress Chintan Shivir here, Sudhakaran said that Rahul Gandhi had recently said in a conversation that he may vacate Wayanad for a local leader from Kerala.

“He had indicated the possibility of stepping down for a local candidate…It was not a clear statement, but a hint,” Sudhakaran said.

He added that Rahul Gandhi had pointed out the need to give opportunities to local leaders in Parliament.

“Top leaders including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi should focus on developing the organization. Therefore, new faces should come to Parliament,” Sudhakaran opined.

However, he insisted that the issue was not discussed in detail at the Chintan Shivir.

Rahul Gandhi’s possible exit from Wayanad has been a subject of speculation for some time now. He has not visited his constituency since winning the seat in 2019.

If he does vacate the seat, it will be a major blow to the Congress in Kerala. Wayanad is one of the few seats that the party managed to win in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
