Kolkata, May 23: The All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) has announced that it will boycott Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony on May 30.

TMC supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has said that her party will not attend the event as a mark of protest against the alleged “authoritarian measures” of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the Centre.

“The TMC believes that the government’s actions in recent times have been anti-democratic and have stifled dissent. We cannot be a part of such a celebration,” Banerjee said in a statement.

The party’s decision has drawn mixed reactions. Some political observers believe that it is a strategic move by the TMC to differentiate itself from the BJP and its allies. Others argue that it is an immature and irresponsible gesture that will hurt the party in the long run.

The TMC has been at loggerheads with the BJP over a number of issues, including the alleged political targeting of its leaders and supporters in West Bengal. The party has also criticized the BJP-led government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and the economy.

The swearing-in ceremony for Prime Minister Modi and his new cabinet is scheduled to take place at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on May 30. It is expected to be attended by leaders from across the country and the world.

The TMC’s boycott decision is likely to cast a shadow over the event and further deepen the political divide in India. It remains to be seen whether other opposition parties will follow the TMC’s lead and avoid the swearing-in ceremony.
