India’s women hockey team created history by defeating world no. 2 Australia 1-0 in the quarterfinal of the Tokyo Olympics. The victory marks India’s first-ever semi-final appearance in the Olympics.

The Indian team, led by Rani Rampal, played with great determination and grit throughout the match. They defended resolutely against the Australian attack and took their chances when they came.

The lone goal of the match was scored by Gurjit Kaur in the 22nd minute. Kaur converted a penalty corner with a powerful drag-flick that gave Australia goalkeeper Rachael Lynch no chance.

The Indian team held on to their lead for the rest of the match, despite some late pressure from Australia. Goalkeeper Savita Punia made some crucial saves in the final minutes to secure the victory.

India’s victory is a major upset, as Australia are one of the favorites to win the gold medal. It is also a testament to the growing strength of Indian hockey.

The Indian team will now face either Argentina or Germany in the semifinals on August 4.
