Washout Puts Sri Lanka on Brink of Exit; Nepal Hurt by Result Too, but SA Confirm Super Eight Spot

A washout in Monday’s match between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan has put the defending champions on the brink of elimination from the World Cup.

The match in Hobart was abandoned without a ball being bowled, meaning both teams shared the points. However, Sri Lanka’s hopes of reaching the Super Eight stage now hang by a thread.

They need to beat England in their final group match on Thursday and hope that other results go their way. If they lose or the match is washed out, they will be eliminated.

Nepal were also hurt by the washout, as they had hoped to secure a first-ever World Cup victory against Afghanistan. They remain bottom of the group with two points from three matches.

Meanwhile, South Africa have confirmed their place in the Super Eight stage with a win over Bangladesh in Adelaide.

Quinton de Kock scored a century as South Africa chased down Bangladesh’s total of 278 with six wickets to spare.

It was South Africa’s third win in four matches, and they will now face England in their final group game on Tuesday.
